Dawn had to be the one to find her - to realise that this old fairytale was actually about a Slayer, who might still be out there somewhere, wherever "there" is, and to trace it back to its roots (critical text analysis is so a weapon).

Oh very much so (or why else would Joss feel the need to diss the word "feminist"? It has power.) This is one of those areas where once again the show could have gone, and didn't - the lack of a history, Buffy having to turn to Spike for information, the WC (including Giles) keeping information to themselves except on a need to know basis. It tracks very nicely with the way that women have been denied education and information, formal and informal - not just in school, but about their own bodies, their sexuality etc

The should could have done a lot with that and it seems to wave the theme around from time tp time and play with it but then drops it and never does anything coherent with it.

(Also, FTN to Xander's "You're not ordinary" speech. Dawn is extraordinary - girlfriend knows how many languages in one short season? I'd love to see more stories about the slayer spell unlocking her power - and not in the way the comics mucked it up, thank you.)
