Drabble

For [livejournal.com profile] open_on_sunday's prompt "Sale."

Stylish, Yet Affordable

"Yup, that's definitely you," the saleswoman beams.

Buffy sighs and checks the price tag on the jacket for the fifth time. "I guess I'm too much for me to handle." She looks away from the mirror as she takes the jacket off; it snags on her Doublemeat Palace name tag.

"Oh, I forgot to mention, this one's on sale. 50% off."

"Really? I -"

"Really."

"Look, I'll be honest with you. I can't really afford a new jacket at all, I just wanted to -"

The saleswoman looks her in the eye. "My son graduated from Sunnydale High. Just take the jacket."

*gulp* Unlike some of your other commentors, I don't see this as particularly cheery. The daily slog comes through, loud and clear. I can feel the helplessness of the saleswoman, making a too small gesture (to her) to a struggling hero. I know she's going to keep worrying...'cos that's what moms do.

Excellent.

Thanks a lot! I definitely planned for this to have sort of a double interpretation - just a sweet random gesture of gratitude, or a genuine "Jesus Christ, my son is in law school and the woman who kept him alive is earning minimum wage" shock moment.
