Good point. Spontaneously, my fanwank for that is the same as the thing Caroline says about trying to wipe a slate ("you can always see what was on it before"). That is, they may officially not remember their lives, but the same part of them that's retaining some ghost of a memory is also processing the trauma of that memory while waiting to wake up again. (See also the Briar Rose metaphor.)

I'm still not sure I'm on board with the whole premise of Dollhouse/i>, but I like the idea of it enough to go with it for now. Unlike some other series.
