Joining the chorus: Please don't auto-share my stuff to Facebook or Twitter or anything like that without asking me first. Reccing within LJ is fine, of course.

Could someone please buy LJ a shiny yo-yo, so they don't get bored and spend their time coming up with functions that just make things worse?

ETA 1: The Greasemonkey script will get rid of the Twitter/Facebook buttons in your own browser, but it won't stop anyone else from automatically (or by mistake) reposting your posts or comments on your posts.

ETA 2: And no tags with slashes in them work anymore. Though I suppose it's possible that Buffy/Angel, being the only acceptable canon OTP, still works.

It doesn't automatically share them, does it??

[identity profile] beer-good-foamy.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you can turn on a feature to automatically share everything. But you can't turn off the feature completely, so there's really only "on" and "always on."

Basically, as I understand it, you have two options:

1) Allow others to repost your stuff to Twitter and Facebook at will simply by clicking a little box when they comment. You can also repost your own posts to Twitter and Facebook by clicking a little box when you post. This is the default.
2) Set it so your posts and comments to them are always automatically posted to Twitter and Facebook.

There is no "Get rid of the fucking Twitter and Facebook crossposting function completely" option.

Hang on. I thought it only reposted your own comment? So if [livejournal.com profile] me_llamo_nic had clicked the 'Twitter' box on his comment, then this would appear on his Twitter feed:

I...don't understand.
About 6 hours ago via Twitter for LiveJournal

But it wouldn't repost what you wrote, surely? Unless he cut and pasted it, but he could do that into Twitter anyway. Not that I see the point...

[identity profile] beer-good-foamy.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't tried since I don't have a twitter account, but I'm assuming that yes, it would post his own comment, and a link to it (because there would be absolutely no point to it otherwise). And therefore a link to mine too.

And he can still share any post of mine with one click using that little "share" button at the top of the page.

ETA: Example. (http://dysonrules.livejournal.com/200879.html)

True, but the difference is that before, you had to make an effort to post something to Twitter. You'd have to copy and paste the post with the specific intent to tweet it.

Now, you could simply be quoting a post (or comment, as I just did to yours) in your reply and then accidentally post it to Twitter just by clicking the wrong box.

Or by having it set to default and forgetting to uncheck the box if you ever want to not crosspost something.

Are you on DW?

[identity profile] beer-good-foamy.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
No. I don't want any more journals. I want this one to work properly.

Isn't that the stupidest bunch of crap? Especially how the default setting it ON.

I don't like this development at all.

[identity profile] beer-good-foamy.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That's putting it mildly. If I wanted my stuff on Facebook, I'd be on Facebook. If I wanted my stuff on Twitter, I'd be on Twitter. I thought it was up to me to choose which social networking sites I'm on. Evidently not.

There is someone whose job it is to come up with new functions. If he doesn't come up with any then they'll decide there is no need for his position to exist. Consequently he has to make changes, even when he knows they're for the worse, to safeguard his job. It's the same in all organisations.

I'm annoyed - but currently saving the lion's share of my annoyance for the fact that slashes aren't working in tabs anymore...

Wait, what?

*checks*

...Fuckers.

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
How do we stop it? :(

Comment on the news thread (http://news.livejournal.com/129190.html?page=73#comments), I suppose. So far LJ haven't even commented on it, so it's possible they're just waiting for it to blow over. But you'd think they couldn't ignore 4,000+ comments of unanimous hatred...

It's the first time I've seen everyone commenting against something. Usually you get a few people in favour...

[identity profile] vilajunkie.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
So what about f-locked posts and comments? Can those be shared through the function? If so, who can actually view them?

[identity profile] beer-good-foamy.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Sort of. See my response to [livejournal.com profile] stormwreath above.

And this is a final test!
