2010 roundup

Happy new year, folks! It's been a weird sort of 2010 fannish-wise, let's see if '11 can take it to Spinal Tap levels. Without further ado, here's the roundup of what I did this year.
Fics/ficlets:
Buffyverse:
Shelf Life. A series of loosely connected fics in which the Scoobies find themselves crossed over with various classic works of literature. Canon pairings... well, except for Faith/Raskolnikov.
Endless Restless Sandman crossover. Dream and Death run into each other in Sunnydale at the end of "Restless." Gen.
The Roots Of All Evil Why is Dawn hanging out in Spike's crypt? Looks like Spike/Dawn, but...
Pull Out The Pin Buffy kills something with a kitchen implement and has sex with Spike afterwards.
Sanguine Drusilla/Darla, "Reunion"
By Design Mr Pointy/Faith's knife. No, really.
Half Full While researching the re-ensoulment spell, Willow has a little accident. Gen.
Hey! You! Get Off Of My Cloud! Evil Dead crossover: Willow and Buffy try to fix Eyjafjallajökull. Gen.
Faith vs The Ass-Elves Ronja the Robber's Daughter crossover. Xander/Anya.
Handsome Men Save Damsels From Monsters So, let's say Connor was born a girl... Written for
angearia's Who Are You ficathon.
Meme Buffy is setting up the new Slayer organisation when a bureaucratic mix-up kills Faith. This may or may not be a good thing. Canon pairings.
Ceteris Paribus In canon, Buffy and Willow are Psychology majors. Isn't it funny how that echoes in a lot of the themes in season 4? What if they'd picked a different subject, like... oh, I dunno... Economics? Sure, the story would mostly be the same, but I have a feeling some of the details would be very different indeed. Canon pairings.
A Touch Of Class Buffy and Faith fight demons. Whatever that means.
Morning Is Broken Everyone has their morning rituals. Until one day in early season 7, when they're interrupted by the latest curse to strike Sunnydale... Willow/Bilbo.
Comic!Buffyverse:
The Plan A missing scene from #34, explaining what's really going on behind the scenes. Or above them. Or... well, everywhere, really. Come with me now, gentle readers, to a secret meeting of... The Universe.
The Kitchen Sink Cracked From Side To Side Xander and Dawn try to make sense of what's going on.
Is That A Good? ...as do the actual villains. And the poor coffee maker.
Penguin!fic!
In Heat (Buffy, Twangel)
Fowl Language (Buffy/IDW!Spike)
About That Prophecy... (Buffy)
Other:
Eagles (Dollhouse: Topher). Topher is thinking about Gollum at the end.
Why Clubs Have Decibel Limits (Sugarshock!) Sugarshock meet Satan.
The Twelve Beers Of Christmas
A self-challenge: twelve holiday-related drabbles or ficlets in twelve days for twelve fandoms. Not all of it turned out great, but it did what it was supposed to.
Drabbles:
Checking In (AtS: Faith, post-"Sanctuary")
A World To Win (BtVS: Giles and Buffy after "Graduation Day")
All Wrapped Up (BtVS: Willow/Xander, Wishverse)
There Goes The Cavalry (AtS: Spike/Andrew, post-"Not Fade Away")
Corporate Ladder (AtS: OC Wolfram & Hart employee)
Let Me Have Men About Me That Are Fat (BtVS: Luke, Darla)
Room Service (BtVS: Clem)
Cultural Reference Gap (Farscape: ensemble, Crocodile Dundee crossover)
No Souvenirs (BtVS: Dawn, Willow/Tara, post-series)
Small People (BtVS: Giles, Tony Hayward, post-series)
There Should Be A Play (BtVS: Snyder)
Golden Goal (BtVS: Live report of "Chosen" from First Evil TV)
Super Callisthenics (BtVS: Willow/Kennedy, post-series)
When You Have To Go There (BtVS: Spike, Dawn, post-series)
They Mostly Come At Dawn... Mostly (BtVS: Vampire OC, Buffy, post-series)
Saving Face (Doctor Who: Four, Sarah Jane)
Re-Make (BtVS: Andrew, post-series)
Meta:
The Doctor Who New Year's Special
Reap what you... so? What sort of Grim Reaper collects people in the Buffyverse?
Which Olympic disciplines are the BtVS characters into?
One final piece of Season 8 speculation
Five Reasons I Love Twin Peaks
Five quick thoughts on the Dr Who finale
In praise of "Beer Bad"
Season 8 #36 not-review
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
In retrospect, about the same but in weird bursts. I wrote quite a lot in the early part of the year, then hit a huge comics-inspired inspirational gravel pit sometime during the summer and haven't really bounced back from that.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2010?
I think it's safe to say that nobody expected that anyone would write penguin!fic.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
To not overdo it. If anything, I ended up trying to take a less serious approach and just get back to the fun part of writing.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
Well, I do have this one Doctor Who crossover that I need to get started on... if I can just stop giggling at the premise and just write it. Regarding Buffyverse stuff, it would be nice to be able to ignore the you-know-what completely and just write about the TV series I love.
From my past year of writing, what was...
My best story of this year:
Probably Ceteris Paribus. If the comics achieved one good thing, it was all the analysis done by both fans and critics, both of the comic and the TV series... but at the same time, not everything needs to be analysed, and I realised at some point that almost everything I'd written over a certain length lately had a pretty serious point somewhere underneath. I'd been deconstructing, critiquing, interrogating the text, or in some cases just underlining the same points the original already made, and not always successfully. It was nice to just drop that and get back to total irreverent fun. Dance, puppets, dance!
My most popular story of this year:
Going by number of comments, it seems to have been The Plan. Going by number of awards, Pull Out The Pin. The lesson seems to be "make fun of the comics and write Spuffy and people will give you shiny things."
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Why Clubs Have Decibel Limits. There needs to be a Sugarshock! fandom.
Most fun story to write:
Again, Ceteris Paribus. It just ran away with me. The Plan was fun too, even if the reason for writing it was a bit depressing.
Story with the single sexiest moment:
I really like the minimalist sex scene in Sanguine.
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Well, there was no cannibalism, beastiality (supposed canon excepted) or completely outrageous pairings this year (unless you count Mr Pointy/Faith's knife). Some people seem to have thought Clem's breakfast routine was wrong, but I think it's kind of sweet. But I managed to creep myself out a bit with the body horror in Half Full.
Hardest story to write:
Probably Meme, or rather what Meme isn't since it doesn't feel finished to me. I had all these various scenes and it still feels like the whole thing should either be a lot shorter or a lot longer. I have a bunch of ideas for what could happen post-series, and they all have some similarities but not all of them match up.
Biggest Disappointment(s):
In my own writing, Handsome Men Save Damsels From Monsters, which I still think had a good idea but ended up pretty heavy-handed and preachy.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
Hmmm... well, for all my protestations that nobody should take Ceteris Paribus seriously, I did follow it up with a story about class and alienation... make of that what you will. :)
