Very true, but in 1 and 2 they died in humorous ways; they kept the comedy aspect of the show. "And now at last I shall be king of E-"
Blackadder goes Forth doesn't invite you to laugh at everyone's death. It plays it completely straight. It takes the underlying theme of the whole season - "this war is pointless" - to its logical conclusion and lets the characters lose.
