This song changed my life the first time I heard it in my early teens. I had no idea music could do that. That point where Maureen Tucker misses a beat on the drums, the bottom falls out and the song just rips apart into a thousand chaotic whirling pieces, Lou Reed can't help but laughing into the mic with sheer joy, and then it finally lands in a mess of feedback and shrieking viola and just... stops.

Well, it looks like the mind meld is finally complete. When I read today's topic, I immediately thought VU. I didn't go for "Heroin", though. My favorite is "White Light, White Heat"; it's the best description of how exhilarating and terrifying a heroin rush can be.

Honestly, I could go either way on the VU; there's hardly a note wrong on those first three albums. (OK, there are plenty of notes wrong, but they're the right wrong.)

And Bowie always did good VU covers. I mean, he did "Waiting for the Man" before the first VU album even came out.
