That IS, like your icon says, a good point about hunter-gatherers usually being mostly monogamous, and you're absolutely correct. However, and I now realize I was very vague about this when I wrote the fic at 1AM, they would also most likely be made up of small groups of more than one family, which would imply that just like stormwreath guessed - Gakha isn't the only adult male of the group but the last and has, in effect, taken in the widows of the other men. The mere fact that he's out risking his life all alone to hunt down a very difficult (and potentially dangerous) prey would be a sign of desperation - like wolves, men tend to hunt in packs.
And yes, Holland's speech was very much the inspiration for this - though I'd actually completely forgotten about the caveman line, haha.
