I tried to find some info on Japanese vampires but I'm rubbish at finding my way around Wikipedia, so I didn't fine any.
I was going to mention Giles re: Xander looking silly. Giles looks pretty ridiculous in this episode too - and it perfectly true of course, as you say, that all the characters get to look stupid at times (Spike spent an awful lot of AtS season 5 looking stupid - which, come to think of it, I didn't like very much, though it was all right in TGiQ because Angel looked even stupider).
