1) I'm the first to admit that Joss occasionally took liberties for the sake of the plot or joke of the week; however, IMO the show never built entire season arcs on pretty much everyone acting this far removed from how they'd been portrayed earlier in canon.
2) Well, obviously, as I stated at the very start of this post. Who knows, maybe I completely misunderstood the entire series every single time I watched it. But I don't think it's just my idea that this is exactly the same sort of plot they used literally dozens of times on the show, and which was always approached in one way on the show... and now, for no stated reason, isn't.
3) Speaking as someone who thinks s6 is one of the best of the entire series (and who doesn't think Buffy/Satsu is by any means the weirdest thing to happen in Season 8) - you're welcome. ;-)
