7. A song to drive to
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Ramble Tamble

There are plenty of good ol' American rock'n'roll songs about barrelling down the highway. The genius of this paranoid little runaway song (They're selling independence/Actors in the white house/Acid in digestion/Mortgage on my life/Mortgage on my life/Ooooooo, down the road I go!) is that traffic jam in the middle, with the heat and carbon monoxide and frustration piling up until it finally clears and you get to floor it again.

I usually don't have the car to myself. It's usually me, the wife and the boy on a family outing. The radio is set to the oldies station, which (these days) is mostly 80s. It's a workable compromise. On longer trips, we tend to listen to full albums. Favorites: Billy Joel, The Stranger and Elton John, Diamonds.

(When it's just me and the boy: Dave Brubeck, Time Out.)

When I am alone, I mostly go Classic Rock radio and turn my brain off. Ramble Tamble is just my cruising speed.

Of course, on those long drives from Stuttgart to Vienna.....

That was....

Ungaublich!

Gotta admit, my krautrock fandom begins and ends with Kraftwerk. But I think I'm going to dig into Neu! (and Can), because that was absolutely hypnotic.

I like it! Gotta love a song about running away from it all.
