18. A song from the year you were born
Pink Floyd - The Great Gig In The Sky

Dark Side of the Moon is still one of the best pieces of music I know, and this sits right at the centre. Nothing else ever sounded like it. Also, this video is, as I believe the kids say, #2020mood.

Have you noticed that Clare Torry now gets a songwriting credit? (Martha Wash's legal campaign for underappreciated backup singers pays dividends in the strangest of places...)

*****************

1959 was a so-so year for rock and pop, but it was a banner year for jazz. Kind of Blue by Miles Davis. Ah Um by Charles Mingus. Giant Steps by John Coltrane.

But you already know who I'm going to play, don't you?

Can't forget Ornette.

I gravitated to all of these albums as an adult, completely unaware they were made during my birth year; it's as if I were bio-electrically attuned to find them.

(Or maybe it's because they're great fucking records.)

This was the only cover version on the Flaming Lips cover album that I really enjoyed.
