open_on_sunday prompt "Hate" inspired both Fuffy silliness and Angel/Cordy/Xander angst.

Be Brief In It

He stays by the fresh grave until darkness falls, until the other arrives.

"I used to hate her, you know. We had a club and everything." There's wonder in his voice at the years gone by. "Not the way I hate you, obviously, but... The shoe obsession, the way she opened her mouth without thinking first..."

Angel nods. "The always getting her way, the sarcasm..."

"God, I hated her." Xander adjusts his eyepatch.

"Did you ever tell her that?"

"Oh yeah. All the time."

Angel's voice wavers slightly. "I never did."

They could say more, but sometimes hate is easier.

"Because, miss Holier-Than-Thou, you're gonna get everyone killed!"

"Look who's talking! Murdered anyone lately?"

"Get your hands off me, B."

"Or what?"

"Push me again and you'll find out."

"You mean... like this?"

"OK, that's it."

Downstairs, Rona listened in disbelief. "Our leaders hate each other. Great."

Willow grimaced. "Well, it's... complicated."

"Hey, they've stopped yelling, that's..." Vi blushed. The sound of bedsprings and occasional moans from upstairs was unmistakable. "...oh."

"So, it took them 4 years and 188 days. Pay up, Will." Xander held out his hand.

Willow grumbled. "Double or nothing they start fighting about who's on top."

With the common misunderstanding of a certain line in 8.06, I really felt like writing a bit of Faith femslash... ;-) And the first one... it just struck me; Xander is probably the only major character who can truly hate someone. Or at least tell himself that he does... *flashes back to the basement scene in "What's My Line"*

I never gave it much thought, but you're right -- Xander, more than any of them, has the past and the personality suited for harboring real hatred within him. It makes you wonder if those writers who insist on treating him only as common relief really get Xander, at all.
