Miscellany

1. Just got caught up with s3 of New Doctor Who and while I wouldn't say I'm completely sold on it yet, it does have a lot of great things about it (RTD's scripts not always being one of them, but...) So if anyone has any fic or similar stuff that I just *have* to read, I'd appreciate a rec! (Also, I need a dalek icon. Daleks > Everything Else In The Universe Ever.)

ETA: Thanks [livejournal.com profile] stormwreath for the icon!

2. A couple of Buffyverse recs, since I don't rec nearly enough stuff:

3. Finally, a couple of icons I've made on a whim and never posted here.

RTD's scripts not always being one of them, but...
*snerk* RTD is very Joss-like - he'll shun logic etc for the sake of his story if necessary. He just uses 'science' instead of a Hellmouth...

Kinda stuck when it comes to recs (except for my own story of course), since I read v. little Who fic... But here is a brilliant time-sex macro series. DW is so macro-able it *hurts*! :)

we call babys "the" after me

Love it! :-D It is a pretty show, isn't it? Right now I'm trying my damnedest to NOT make a Master vid... I think I'm going to fail at that.

My main problem with RTD's scripts is that... well, he can't write scripts. He's good at the whole metaphor/character/UST thing, but he can't plot a story. Every single episode of his seems the same:
1. Problem
2. Doctor says something funny
3. More problems
4. Doctor and Martha run around like headless chickens for 10-20 minutes, jumping/crawling through hoops/tunnels and dodging bullets/lasers/daleks
5. Doctor (or possibly Martha) says something smart (if it's the Doctor, he may get to be a little psycho while saying it)
6. Problem solved until RTD ties back to it in the last episode.
As much as I'd like to think that the Doctor's tennis shoes are a fashion statement, it seems more like a practical consideration; all that running would be impossible in better shoes...

Love it! :-D
Thought you might like it! *g* ([livejournal.com profile] ihasatardis might be just your thing...)

It is a pretty show, isn't it?
Oooooh yes. Even the bad episodes are usually gorgeous visually (and the people are pretty too of course...).

Right now I'm trying my damnedest to NOT make a Master vid... I think I'm going to fail at that.
Do not fight it! I'd *love* to see what you'd make. (I have lots of vid recs btw...)

See this is where I'm probably way to easy to please, 'cause I can cope with a rubbish plot if all the rest works. (Can't do the opposite which one reason why s8 ain't working for me.) Also - thankfully - he's not the only writer! Stephen Moffat is my new idol btw. Have you seen 'Time Crash'? (The 'Children in Need' special.)

[identity profile] beer-good-foamy.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen "Time Crash" yet, I'll have to get around to that. Generally speaking I'm not too hung up on plot either, but since I watched all of s2 and s3 pretty much in two weeks, I suppose the similarities started getting to me.

Moffat seems pretty damn sharp, yes. "The Girl In The Fireplace" and "Blink" were both great.

Re: Time Crash:

"Did he still have that rubbish beard?"

"No, no beard this time. Well, a wife."

Literally LOL!

Literally LOL!
As I said, Moffat is something resembling a genius. The thing is only a little over 5 minutes, but every line just *shines*! (I wrote a squee/meta thing after it aired. *g*

(Also, Doctor/Master 4eva!)

I read that late last night, enjoyed it lots!

Oh, and also, I got this crossover plotbunny that's going to be almost impossible to make sense of, but just to put it out there:

Puppet!Angel vs Gollum!Doctor. Cagefight for the Champion of Humanity lightweight title.
elisi: Edwin and Charles (PuppetAngel by the_royal_anna.)

[personal profile] elisi 2008-01-24 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
*giggles very quietly so as not to wake the toddler asleep on shoulder*

Oh! I've written a tiny little crossover fic, way back during S1 of DW: Three leatherclad Musketeers.

ETA: One reason I don't read a lot of Who fic, is that the show is still on and I much prefer a closed canon. My own fic ('Not The Last') is wildly AU, so won't interfere with whatever happens in the future of the show. Actually I've read a fair bit of Torchwood fic, but then the fic is usually better than the show. And also it can be totally cracktastic and porny without seeming at all farfetched! ;)

Again, Sarah, the best person to rec Doctor Who fic. She reads a lot of it. But have you checked out A Teaspoon and An Open Mind? They are the biggest Who Fic collection out there. You can search by Doctor and the summaries are really good.

If you like the idea of Nine/Rose, I can rec one of the *best* writers for them out there. She is amazing.

Also, you might want to join [livejournal.com profile] who_daily. They operate differently than someplace like SU Herald. They tell you EVERYTHING that they can find that has gone on in the fandom for the day. It is so amazing and comphrensive.

I'll check my faves on Teaspoon and see if there is anything gen that is good. I tend to stick to Nine and Four as my doctors of choice though.

[identity profile] beer-good-foamy.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, thanks for the tip! I'll have to check that out. So far I'm not really much for the shipping aspect of the show (well, there's Doctor/Master, which IMO makes more sense than Ten/Rose...) I suppose so far I'm a bit screwed, pairing-wise; I would have liked to see Nine/Martha. Well, anything with Nine, really.

[identity profile] boy-named-susie.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well if you are not big on the shipping aspect of the show, new DW fic is not for you because that's what the vast majority of it consists of, with a *large* portion of that being Ten/Rose. I have seen a couple of random Nine/Martha fics since you bring that up, and if I see them again, I'll let you know.

As for recs, most of what immediately springs to mind for me are old school set fics, and you haven't started watched the old stuff yet.

So, the most valuable thing I think I could tell you is to go and join [livejournal.com profile] calufrax. It's a brand new comm that just opened a few weeks ago, and its purpose is to rec fics that are on Teaspoon (the major DW fic site). Two or three people each week do recs, and everything I've read that's been recced over there has been *fantastic.* They rec old school and new school, and I'm sure you'll find something great to read over there.

That's what I've gathered too - then again, when I first started reading Buffy fic, it felt like a struggle to find anything that wasn't purely Spuffy or Spander. I figure the other stuff has to be out there. I'll check out [livejournal.com profile] calufrax, thanks!

Sorry to jump into every thread in the whole post...

So far I'm not really much for the shipping aspect of the show (well, there's Doctor/Master, which IMO makes more sense than Ten/Rose...) I suppose so far I'm a bit screwed, pairing-wise;
I'm the same actually. (And the DW fandom is scary crazy when it comes to shipping. They have companion wars going back 40 odd years, and it's just getting worse now. I stay far, far away!) Anyway, I *like* Ten/Rose a lot, and 'Doomsday' invariably has me in tears, but I'm not a shipper. Actually I remember when 'The Girl in the Fireplace' first aired, because half my flist discovered that they'd become rabid shippers (much to their worry) - they *didn't* like Reinette one tiny little bit ("Who's that cheap tarte locking lips with Rose's Doctor, eh?") Personally I adored the ep, and was delighted that The Doctor got to 'dance'! *g*

Anyway, re fic then there's [livejournal.com profile] doctor_who_gen. No idea what the quality of the writing is, but at least you'll avoid the ships! :)

Oh and I have a vid rec: Our Lord and Master, a tribute to the Master. Uses lots of Classic material and the most fabulous song. And the ending kills me every time! :)

ETA: Actually, I'm an avid Master/Lucy shipper (*so* screwed up!) and Master/Doctor of course, which is even more screwed up and impossible. But I like that. :)

Huh. I loved everything about TGitF, including "I just snogged Madame de Pompadour!" That's the whole problem with Who shipping in a nutshell, isn't it? He goes off to save the world, and they die too soon.

I'll check that stuff out when I get home, thanks!

Oh me too. Brilliant, brilliant episode. What I'm talking about can best be illustrated in this post! :)

Oh absolutely! I've got half-finished meta sat on a folder somewhere analysing it!

And I love this icon.

Thanks for the recs! Where's the picture of Wesley from?

[identity profile] beer-good-foamy.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's from a preview picture posted here (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/35281) (very very VERY slight spoilers, maybe, but worth it for the pretty).

Thank you! God yes, it is very very pretty. And your chairman of the board icon makes me laugh. (He and Cordy can be bored together?)

Ooooh, baby. Shake that eyestalk. Haha! Love that one. Damn this limited icon space, but I'll definitely have to use that one at some point. Thanks!
