Stuff the first: Banner, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] xlivvielockex! Oh, Marti, how I love thee.

Stuff the second: icon for [livejournal.com profile] still_grrr's "Bring Out Your Dead" month. Sappy, I know, but I think we've already established that I'm a bit of a softy sometimes.

Stuff the third: The big LJ emigration. I ain't goin' nowhere.

Over the past few weeks, a lot of people stood united. As someone who's fairly new to the whole thing, I found it incredibly moving. And while a mass exodus to greatestjournal or insanejournal or wallstreetjournal might look like a good idea on paper, it feels a bit like retreating and dividing strength to me - even IF most people were to emigrate to the same place with all flists, comms and links in place, which feels unlikely (and even if the new place didn't go the same way as LJ two years from now...)

So no more runnin'. Misbehave. Join [livejournal.com profile] fandom_counts. Join [livejournal.com profile] fan_investors. And, well, keep on keepin' on. To quote one of the many icons that's been making the rounds - "Fuck not with fandom, for fandom fucks back". Not off. Big business is here to stay and we're not getting out of its belly, but I kinda like the idea of us giving it salmonella now and then.

ETA: Such as [livejournal.com profile] china_shop's wonderfully pervy Making Up Is Hard To Do (LJ/Fandom, NC-17). Go read.

ETA 2: Or, for that matter, [livejournal.com profile] vampedvixen's The New Big Bad. Snicker.

Running away, boycotts, the like... seems lame. I mean when there are 13+ million people on LJ, a few people leaving is not making any kind of difference.

And even if only, say, 25% of those are actually very active (that's a number I completely pulled out of my ass) that's still the equivalent of a big city (or a very small country). And no society is ever free from the odd scandal, miscarriage of justice or mad dictator. Which isn't to say that the LJ people have NOT made a complete mess of things, but... Gotta take the good with the bad, etc. As long as they don't actually try to throw us out, I think leaving is an overreaction.

Definitely. Even if a few thousand people up and left, which I don't think that many would, it wouldn't even make a dent/

Agreed. If you leave the moment you feel like you're not wanted, what exactly is being accomplished?

Last time everyone got uppity, over the adverts I think, a lot of GJs were created, mainly to reserve our user names there in case. Then they got very little posted in them until last week.

I honestly expect that the same thing is likely to happen this time around as well - especially as no-one that is in my circle of friends and friends' friends were actually affected - at least not this time!

So far, I've seen one single person on my flist say they were leaving LJ for good. Which is too bad, but... If there's a migration, it'll end up with a few people on IJ and GJ and all us lazy bastards who can't be bothered staying at LJ, and that's... if not the death, then at least the severe illness of fandom. I'd like to think it would take a more substantial threat for that to happen.

I really don't think there is any such thing as a mass emigration ... people just want to know they have an alternate spot to congregate & find each other (& post fic and such) if it's ever needed.

And many people, with the ongoing DDoS issues, are having trouble posting anything at LJ, which is one reason there's so much activity at GJ and IJ at the moment!

BTW, I loved your "I object!" post but somehow managed to miss saying so at the time!

So no more runnin'. Misbehave.

Darn Tootin'! I ain't going nowhere, neither. Rich and Famous, Poor and Obscure, LJ's my Home.

Stand and be counted, for if they tried to do it now, you know for darn sure they'll try to do it again.

Have a good day!

Rule number 1: If you retreat, the enemy will just follow you to the next battlefield.

Actually, I have no proof that this is rule number 1 -- it might be 5, or 12 -- but it sounds good to me.

I think rule #1 is "Don't march on Moscow". :-)

"Don't march on Moscow" ...
