So, who did kill Laura Palmer?

It was 20 years ago today...
On April 8, 1990, the first episode of Twin Peaks aired. I think that deserves a lovepost.
Five reasons I love Twin Peaks:
- Because it had Agent Cooper and Agent Cooper is awesome.
- Because it was the first show (that I was aware of) that, much like Buffy 7 years later, walked that fine line between parodying a genre (supernatural soap opera cop show) and playing it straight enough for the plot and characters to matter. And much like Buffy, the demons and hell dimensions only serve to bring out the inherent problems, structures and bad sides that are already there - but often coded so deep into minds and society that you need to break reality to see it.
- Because, quite frankly, it scared me shitless on occasion. Still does. And at the same time, it was hilarious. Still is.
- Because nobody does dream logic and perception filters like Lynch. I know, I'm complaining about Season 8 not making sense and I'm loving Twin Peaks. The difference (apart from the fact that Twin Peaks was actually made more weird by the not-too-good working relationship between Lynch and ABC) is that Lynch establishes his own logic right away and then (as long as he was running the show) sticks to it. His logic resembles our earth logic just enough to make the difference a point in itself; we need to understand how Cooper works to work out how he solves the case, and he needs to understand how BOB works to do that. We're not being asked to ignore logic because it's cool, but to understand how it's applied in situations where what we think should be impossible isn't.
- Because it paved the way. Twin Peaks took chances and got smacked down for it, but it opened doors and it's hard to imagine shows like Buffy, X Files, Carnivale or even Sopranos (that long dream scene after Tony is shot? I was just waiting for a dancing dwarf to show up) without it.
David Lynch, I fill my cup with damn fine coffee and salute thee.
(Also, I've written Buffy/TP crossovers in the past. I may do it again. Suggestions welcome.)
