You know, I was watching Doctor Horrible again, and it struck me... Joss is nothing if not consistent. Maybe not always in characterisation, but definitely in themes. So I was going to write something on the similarities between Season 8 and Doctor Horrible, but I figured it would be more fun to do it in the form of... motivational posters! Some making half-serious points, others... perhaps not so much.

Spoilery for both series and not dial-up friendly... are people still on dial-up? Anyone? Anywhere?

ETA: Because [livejournal.com profile] stormwreath wanted more Hammer/Buffy comparisons, here's a slightly different one:

Not a fan of either of those Joss products, personally, but those were very funny and go together beautifully.

Those are great!

I'm on dialup. One of those "mobile broadband" things that are basically mobile phone modems that vary from pathetic to decent for folk who don't have a quasi-competent phone company in their area.

That's interesting. I've gotten so used to broadband I barely remember what it was like surfing on dial-up... and it was only a couple of years ago. :-)

You know how British soldiers used to wear red coats so you couldn't tell if there was blood on them? Well, Twilight's wearing a brownish mask...

Thanks - glad you liked them! The similarities between Buffy and Dr Horrible aren't perfect, but I don't think they're all that far-fetched either - someone with ideals trying to do right and ending up heading in a different direction... where Buffy will end up still remains to be seen, obviously.

Interesting that you've cast Buffy as Dr Horrible. ;-) I certainly see your point given Season 8, but there are those that would actually say she's Captain Hammer: the smugly self-righteous crusader for Good who believes that hitting things is always a good solution, and refuses to see anything even slightly morally dubious about herself.

It's almost as if Joss is capable of nuance and multiple layers. :-)

Oh, there are definitely parts of Hammer in her too - and so I put Hammer's words in her mouth once or twice. Joss may re-use character traits, but s8!Buffy's no more only Dr Horrible than Jayne is only Cordelia. :-)

I'd say some key differences in this case are
- Buffy and Billy are outsiders; they're not the establishment as represented by Twilight and Hammer.
- Which means B&B are (or believe themselves to be) agents of change whereas H&T are for preserving the way things are.
- B&B break the law for what they (presumably) believe is a greater good; Hammer upholds the letter of the law as if that were a greater good.
- B&B start out looking like heroes and gradually turn out to be exactly what their nemesises...es accuse them of being.
- Of course, Buffy is one thing (dangerous revolutionary) to Twilight and the exact opposite (the one who makes the rules, the one who represents tradition, the one who tries to preserve the way things are now) to the Slayers. And hey, Dr Horrible got in the Evil League of Evil. Fun historical fact: the first German encyclopedia, translated from the French Encyclopédie, translated "counter-revolutionary" as "enemy of the state." Once you take power, you get to use power.
- And both B&B seem to have replaced ethics with lofty ideals; the idea is to build a better world, but for whom? Baby steps and gradual change aren't on the menu. This petition isn't about the building.

The two sides pretty much embody the old saying (I can't remember the source right now): "It's easy to be a radical, since none of your ideas have been tested in practice. It's easy to be a conservative, since all of your ideas have been tested in practice." Which I don't exactly agree with, but y'know the drill - thesis, antithesis, synthesis.

Then again, I haven't had my coffee yet. :-)

EDIT: Reposted for mistranslation and one more half-assed point.
