brutti_ma_buoni wanted something with Book, and since today is the feast of St Lucia, I thought I might start with him.

The Shepherd's room is dark, save for a small lantern on the table at which Book is reading. "You know," Mal says, "that's apt to ruin your eyesight."
"I used to serve at an abbey on northern Persephone. The winters were long and dark, and we only had candles. Guess I got used to it." Book smiles. "We used to say that the darkness makes you appreciate the light more."
"That's true." Mal nods at the light switch. "'Course, my mother said something about cursing the dark."
"Also a good point."
As they talk, Serenity floats through deep black space.
