"In moments of great stress, every life form that exists gives out a tiny subliminal signal. This signal simply communicates an exact and almost pathetic sense of how far that being is from the place of his birth."
- Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
( She comes to bars for the people, navigating mostly by Sight, as if age has finally dulled all her other senses to blissfully vague background noise. )

brutti_ma_buoni wanted something with Book, and since today is the feast of St Lucia, I thought I might start with him.

Vids roundup
May. 2nd, 2010 12:48 amLike many others, I got fed up with having my vids taken down from youtube and uploaded them to Vimeo instead. Let's hope they stay up a bit longer. You can find all 11 of them on my profile page, here. And as an extra service to those of you who don't want to leave the warm fuzziness that is LJ, I've embedded them under the cut.

You know how sometimes a song and a movie/series just seem made for each other? I made the connection between these two a while ago and just couldn't shake it. So here it is.

For
open_on_sunday's prompt "Prosper", and slightly inspired by this drabble by
a2zmom:
An Offer You Can't Refuse
The oldest active contract isn't with the British crown or the Vatican, as many assume; far from it. They're just the ones who never fail to pay. (Shi Huangdi cancelled all payments to afford the wall. Hammurabi's deal was reinstated in the 1990s AD after a brief interruption.)
Naturally, it's all very hush-hush; there's no "Watcher's Council" post in any national budgets nowadays. Continuity, consistency, safety are the keywords, and you can't risk elected plebs or revolutionaries asking questions. A few million, a few girls... You can't be expected to keep the world safe on a normal wage, can you?
For
shego2drakken, who wanted something with Wash in it, and inspired by some of the recent Dollhouse and Twilight discussions:
Two Points
"Wait, what are you... ooooh no you don't!" Wash wrestles the girl from the nav computer. It's surprisingly difficult; she's slippery like a cat, and keeps babbling hysterically about a calm before the storm or possibly the other way around. "SIMON! Your sister's being charming again!"
The others arrive, and before Simon manages to calm her down she points - to Mal, to Wash, to Simon, who knows - and yells that they can't keep them safe.
The hell I can't, Wash mutters as he resets the autopilot. The girl had plotted a course straight for reaver territory, how's that for safe?

writercon100 prompt "Con":
Complete Control
The trick isn't playing them. That gets you paid, sure, but it's not what makes it worth it.
Con artist. Her training didn't cover etymology, but her latest husband has a dictionary in the nightstand. She finds it under con man; says it's about misusing confidence. Sounds about right, though she has her own definition.
Saffron blows a last kiss at another unconscious sap who still thinks he played her, thinks he married a simple pioneer-moon girl and will wake up with only what she lets him keep. Knowing she can do anything. This is what makes it worth it.

Having seen Tennant in Hamlet and read Bill Bryson's Shakespeare (both of which were excellent) lately, I just thought I'd write down some thoughts on the use of Shakespeare in the Buffyverse. Quite a few thoughts. This gets long, and covers spoilers for all of the Jossverse and Shakespeareverse (as if anyone doesn't know how his plays end).
Joss likes Shakespeare. This would be obvious even if we didn't know that he, for instance, used to hold Shakespeare readings at his house for the Buffy cast; there's quite a lot of allusions to Shakespeare in his stories, both explicit and implicit ones. This obviously won't be a complete list of all parallels between Shakespeare and Whedon, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone points out that Joss references a bunch of plays I don't even mention here. ( Lay on, Macduff! And damn'd be he who first cries 'Hold! Enough!' )

Just some icons I whipped up while in a state of boredom. And also for a few challenges.
( Spoilerish icons from 'Season 8' #10 )
( For the still_grrr challenge 'noir' )
( For the lateseasonlove challenge 'Villains' )
12-16: quotes from The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep. And yes, 22 is a quote from the Buffy movie.

Firefly/Seinfeld crossover ficlet
Dec. 17th, 2007 12:39 amFirst of all, an upcoming-fic question for US people on my flist: What are the odds of warm weather in Chicago over Christmas? Is it completely impossible, or do Illinoisians occasionally get heatwaves in December?
Second of all, and the main point of this, Happy birthday
boy_named_susie! I finished a silly old plotbunny for the occasion: a Firefly/Seinfeld crossover.
