Here's my second entry for this year's Buffyverse Bingo. Let's say this one is for "Autumn holiday/festival".

Title: Civilization
Author: Beer Good ([personal profile] beer_good_foamy)
Fandom: Angel, pre-series
Characters/Pairing: Darla, The Master
Rating: PG13
Word count: ~750
Summary: In our reality, the Roanoke colony in Virginia disappeared mysteriously at some point between 1588 and 1590, and the first successful English colony in Virginia was only established in 1607. In the Buffyverse, that colony appears strangely well-established in 1609. There's an obvious explanation for this, that includes the girl who would become Darla.

Roanoke colony was so very small compared to Southampton. At first the girl had scoffed at playing with these children, most of whom had never seen city streets. She missed her friends back home, and having to do so much extra work in the fields and kitchens didn't feel much like the new start her mother had promised her. But truth was, she got along fine with the children, and running around the forests and fields was something new, something it felt like she'd been missing. And then there were the stories. )

Phew. So I got this prompt for [livejournal.com profile] intoabar, and I was stuck. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how these two would ever meet up or how they'd react to each other. And then, five days before deadline, this happened, and I'm rather happy with it.

ETA: Apparently, Twisting The Hellmouth are scared of GRRM's lawyers and don't allow GoT crossovers. Meanwhile, there are 2,732 fics on AO3... go figure.

Title: How To Drain Your Flagon
Author: Beer Good ([personal profile] beer_good_foamy)
Prompt: Wesley Wyndam-Pryce meets Khal Drogo
Fandoms: Angel/Game of Thrones (early season 1 of both series)
Word count: ~1100
Rating/Contents: PG13
Warnings: No warnings needed
Author's Note: I haven't read the books and am unspoiled beyond s3 of Game of Thrones.

[livejournal.com profile] upupa_epops asked:
Buffyverse, translations. Have you ever seen Buffyverse in any other language? Tried to translate anything? Wrote fic in another language? I'm very curious about other people's experience with Buffyverse language in translation.

My response, and some additional thoughts )

[livejournal.com profile] wheatear asked:
Sci-fi fandoms: do sci-fi shows tend to present an atheistic or theistic universe? Discuss the differences.

My response, and some additional thoughts )

There's a lot of other interesting questions and posts there, and some interesting replies to my posts as well which I won't copy here without permission. Go check it out!

Might as well get this posted before I rewrite the ending yet again. Not the brightest and happiest fic I've written. I blame February.

Title: All But Left To Hunger
Fandom: Angel, post-"Not Fade Away"
Pairing: Drusilla/Faith; vague references to Faith/Buffy and Drusilla/Angelus
Rating: Let's say R just to be safe, though there's nothing explicit
Word count: ~1300
Warnings: Character death, allusions to past abuse, general Dru POV
Summary: Drusilla and Faith both find themselves in the alley shortly after "Not Fade Away". They're too late to change the future, now they're stuck with the past.
Written for [livejournal.com profile] xlivvielockex's Femslash February and [personal profile] snowpuppies's prompt "Faith/Dru, sorrow"

When she gets there, the battle is over. )

Right, so here we go! Turns out the last-minute plotbunny I got for [livejournal.com profile] letsgetitdone opened up to a multi-chapter fic, which doesn't happen often. I think we're looking at something like 4 or 5 installments here, which should hopefully be posted over the next 2 weeks or so. Seriously, I have an outline and everything.

Title: Development Hell
Author: Beer Good ([personal profile] beer_good_foamy)
Fandom: Buffyverse, post-"Chosen"
Rating: PG13
Word Count: ~900 (this chapter)
Characters/Pairings: Let's see, there's Buffy, Andrew, Lorne, and a couple of OCs. Various other characters as well as canonical pairings will be alluded to, played with, and lovingly frosted with glucose. Also, any similarities to actual Hollywood actors are entirely coincidental, I swear.
Summary: While killing time in Rome, Buffy runs into a new Slayer with a shocking secret. Now, she's going to have to face her past to keep both herself and those around her from a Fate Worse Than Death... Hollywood.

Chapter 1: In which something funny is going on )

ETA: Something very weird seems to be happening with LJ right now, so if you've commented and your comment disappears, or this entire fic disappears, don't blame me, I didn't do it. Best comment at DW, I guess.

Another one for the crackficathon!

Title: Disneyland Law
Author: Beer Good ([personal profile] beer_good_foamy)
Fandom: Angel/Walt Disney's Robin Hood (1973)
Word count: ~600
Rating: Disney.
Summary: Prince John has a secret weapon in his fight against Robin Hood: his lawyers. Or well, so he thinks.
Written for [personal profile] snickfic's crackficathon and [livejournal.com profile] streussal's prompt: "Wolfram & Hart is an interdimensional organization. Some of these dimensions... are Disney. (Wolfram & Hart has Disney villain clientele. Or a Disney villain RIVAL or something.)"

A thoussssand pardonsssss, Sssssssire, but I've finally found a sssssssolution to our problemsssss. I've assssssembled the finesssssst lawyerssssss in the realm to help you get rid of Robin Hood! )

Here's a pairing I've never written before.

Title: Cloudbusting
Author: [personal profile] beer_good_foamy
Fandom: Buffyverse, post-"Not Fade Away". Kind of a crossover with Return Of The Living Dead, though no familiarity is required.
Word count: ~1200
Pairing: Willow/Illyria
Rating: PG13
Summary: Illyria hates how everything human takes time, especially after 20th century technology disappeared in a flash. And having mentioned that, she's not overly fond of zombies either. But if she has to stop the apocalypse, at least she can do it together with the only other being who's almost as powerful as she is. Written for [community profile] femslash_minis' apocalypse round, and [livejournal.com profile] snogged's prompt "Crack the sky, steampunk, acid rain" with zombies.

Illyria remembers travelling light years in an instant, flitting between dimensions on a whim, making and unmaking with a thought. And here she is, on top of something the humans have laughably named a skyscraper, bathed in tepid stinging rain, using a metal wrench to tighten a bolt that won't fit. )
beer_good_foamy: (Willow-death)
Title: Strawberries
Author: [personal profile] beer_good_foamy
Fandom: Angel, mid-season 5
Word count: ~1100
Pairing: Willow/Fred
Rating: PG13
Summary: Willow comes to LA for a job interview. Or maybe just dinner. But you know how things are never simple...? Written for [livejournal.com profile] femslash_minis' remix round, remix of "Home Coming" by [livejournal.com profile] aaronlisa.

It's weird how only California has proper Mexican food. )

OK, so following up on my post about redemption arcs, here's one about cracks. Not crackfic, but... cracks. That bit where a story made up of several different stories doesn't quite fit together seamlessly, and how that's not necessarily a bad thing.

This post contains spoilers for all aired episodes of Doctor Who, Buffy, Angel and Game of Thrones (the TV series).

So a while back, I was reading Russell T Davies' The Writer's Tale, which if you haven't read it is recommended both for fans of Doctor Who and for those interested in serial television and storytelling in general. And I say this despite the fact that it threw some of the things I dislike about RTD's writing style into even sharper contrast (and that I couldn't care less about his constant fanboying of Skins).

But the point I wanted to bring up, where something clicked into place, was this quote. The Writer's Tale is essentially the (mostly) complete and uncensored e-mail and text correspondence between RTD and Benjamin Cook as RTD writes s4 of Doctor Who, up until Stephen Moffat took over the show. This quote is from page 190-191, where RTD is trying to piece together the Christmas special "Voyage of the Damned", essentially The Poseidon Adventure IN SPACE, and has trouble getting the narratives to play nice:
Davies:
The funny thing is - and I learn this every time, yet forget it - if a fault is fundamental, any problem-solving is only papering over the cracks. The cracks always show. Faults persist. They always do. The disaster movie fights the essential nature of the Doctor, because he becomes just Any Old Survivor - a clever one, yes, the leader, yes, but a hapless victim of events. He's lacking. Now, when the plot turns and he changes ('No more!' he says), then he's in charge again and good old Doctor Who kicks in...

Cook:
Well, isn't that true of the storytelling process full stop? If you're inventing something artificial, something false, and yet you're wanting to convince people that's [sic] it's real so that they can suspend their disbelief sufficiently, surely you're 'papering over the cracks' from the moment that you start writing?

Davies:
I like your version of papering over the cracks. I'm going to cling to that. (...) You're right, most stories require the writer to wallpaper like crazy, especially those stories that demand so many suspensions of disbelief. (...) I am a wallpaperer. Yes, that's what I am.

Now, here's the thing. Step on this crack )

This is the second time I’ve written Faith/Lilah recently, and it’s not really a pairing that lends itself to happy flufftimes. So this got a bit depressing, sorry about that.

Title: Drive It Like You Stole It
Author: Beer Good ([personal profile] beer_good_foamy)
Fandom: Angel
Word Count: ~850
Rating: PG13
Pairing: Lilah/Faith
A/N: Written for [livejournal.com profile] femslash_minis and [livejournal.com profile] aaronlisa’s challenge “Faith/Lilah, limo, champagne, lipstick stains”
Warning: General bleakness, alcohol
Summary: After Faith runs from redemption, she goes to the only one who’ll have her. Good thing that's the winning side.

Faith drinks too much )
beer_good_foamy: (Wild as the wind)
Here's a pairing I don't think I've written before, for [livejournal.com profile] winter_of_faith. Fair warning: it got... pretty dark. There's a really fluffy one on the way to compensate, I promise.

Title: Upon The Edge Of No Escape
Author: Beer Good ([personal profile] beer_good_foamy)
Fandom: Angel, 1.18 "Five By Five"
Word Count: ~1300
Characters/Pairing: Faith/Lilah
Rating: R
Warnings: ***Dubcon, roughness, breathplay, suicidal thoughts, hinted-at past abuse... It's Faith "safety words are for wusses" Lehane in "Five By Five", she's not in a healthy place.***
Summary: Lilah and Faith seal the deal to kill Angel. Only one way out now.

You're never alone with a Smith & Wesson, baby!

I hope everyone's taken a look at the Fandom Love (mini)Fic-A-Thon? Lots of prompts in all sorts of fandoms, to be filled by a one-sentence (or at least very short) fic. Here are the ones I've come up with so far:

Better late than never? Here's my entry for [livejournal.com profile] angearia's Who Are You ficathon:

The “Who Are You” Ficathon focuses on the theme of identity through bodyswaps and genderswaps. Often bodyswap and genderswap fics are only used to explore a character’s sexual identity and in doing so, hook them up with another character. This can lead to gratuitous sex scenes. And hey, those are an enjoyable part of fanfiction, but there’s a whole other world of identity that is not explored when stuck in this highly sexualized corner.  The "Who Are You" Ficathon's goal is to explore the greater breadth and scope of identity.

I'm not sure where this came from, but it was an idea that wanted to get written, so...

And while we're on the topic, BSG fans might want to check out [livejournal.com profile] rayruz's meta on what might have happened if Samuel Anders had been Samantha Anders.

Anyway, let's get on with it.

Like many others, I got fed up with having my vids taken down from youtube and uploaded them to Vimeo instead. Let's hope they stay up a bit longer. You can find all 11 of them on my profile page, here. And as an extra service to those of you who don't want to leave the warm fuzziness that is LJ, I've embedded them under the cut.

Probably not for those on dial-up )

OK, the invitation rule is always fun. If a vampire hasn't been invited into a private residence, there's an invisible barrier keeping him or her out. So in "Epiphany", if you recall, Angel has to save the gang from a bunch of funky demons with eyes in the back of their necks holding them hostage inside a house belonging to the late Sharp family, former non-paying clients of Angel Inc. Angel does this by driving Lindsey's truck straight through the window. One of those hero moments he does.

Now, luckily for him (and less so for the Sharps) everyone who used to live in that house is dead, which means Angel can enter without an invitation. And this is in an episode where the invitation rule is a pretty big theme.

The trouble with that, of course, is that while we know that the Sharps are dead, Angel doesn't. In fact, since the demons want to impregnate humans, it would have made sense for them to NOT kill the people in the house. So say, hypothetically, one or more of the Sharps was still alive. Say the invitation barrier was still up. So a vampire drives a heavy truck at full speed towards a house where he hasn't been invited.

What happens?
