Here's my second entry for this year's Buffyverse Bingo. Let's say this one is for "Autumn holiday/festival".

Title: Civilization
Author: Beer Good ([personal profile] beer_good_foamy)
Fandom: Angel, pre-series
Characters/Pairing: Darla, The Master
Rating: PG13
Word count: ~750
Summary: In our reality, the Roanoke colony in Virginia disappeared mysteriously at some point between 1588 and 1590, and the first successful English colony in Virginia was only established in 1607. In the Buffyverse, that colony appears strangely well-established in 1609. There's an obvious explanation for this, that includes the girl who would become Darla.

Roanoke colony was so very small compared to Southampton. At first the girl had scoffed at playing with these children, most of whom had never seen city streets. She missed her friends back home, and having to do so much extra work in the fields and kitchens didn't feel much like the new start her mother had promised her. But truth was, she got along fine with the children, and running around the forests and fields was something new, something it felt like she'd been missing. And then there were the stories. )

Wait, what? I wrote fic? Oh right, that's a thing I used to do in the before-fore times. This is for my [community profile] buffyversebingo card, and... let's say the "Habeas Corpses" square.

Title: Twists and Turns
Author: Beer Good ([personal profile] beer_good_foamy)
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, pre-series
Characters/Pairing: Spike, Drusilla, Dalton
Rating: PG13
Word count: ~750
Summary: There are rules for how to fight the undead. Being magical (or worse, metaphorical) some of them are bound to work better than others. And sometimes, as Spike and Dru are about to learn the hard way, technological advances bring some of the old ones back into play.

Vampires were fine right up until the point where, suddenly, they weren’t.
- Terry Pratchett

They'd learned to be wary, if not scared (it takes more than just owning a stake) of sunlight, holy water, fire, crosses and sharp bits of wood. )

OK, so here's the first instalment of my [community profile] buffyversebingo card, checking off the box "Tradition".

Title: Give My Love To London
Author: Beer Good ([personal profile] beer_good_foamy)
Fandom: Buffy, pre-series
Pairing: Giles/Ethan
Rating: PG13
Word count: ~600
Summary: The morning after Giles drops out of Watcher school and joins Ethan in London, he thinks about what he's escaping.

"Not my circus, not my monkey."
- Polish proverb

Ethan stirs as Rupert untangles himself from the sheets and rummages through the clothes and junk on the floor for some cigarettes. )

Title: The Queen, The Soldier
Author: Beer Good ([personal profile] beer_good_foamy)
Fandom: Buffy, beginning long, long pre-series
Characters/Pairings: Gen, OC-centred, but the gang shows up at the end
Rating: PG13
Word count: ~2400
Summary: Slayers always died young. Except for one, who did quite the opposite. This is her story. It begins like this: "Once upon a time, a long long time ago, there was a town. And in the town was a girl, who didn't want to die."
Written for [livejournal.com profile] spook_me and the prompt "Giant".

In a gorge in the wilderness outside of town lived a giant. )

So apparently some kind soul has nominated "Building Character" over at [livejournal.com profile] wicked_awards. Huge thanks! I'm still giddy at how well that fic was received.

Also, on a less jolly note, here's a drabble for [livejournal.com profile] open_on_sunday and the prompt "record". I always liked Lydia... I want to say Chalmers, but apparently that's all fanon thanks to this awesome fic? Anyway, here's my take on her.

Academic

Lydia’s father was a Watcher, like his before him. She studied for years, but not everyone’s fit for frontline duty; they also serve et cetera, and archivists are always needed. She grew to love it. Countless unique records going back to antiquity and beyond, brittle from age, Slayers whose entire civilizations were lost but were remembered here.

She survived the blast that destroyed the Council long enough to recognize the ashes raining down around her. Lydia grasped a burning piece of paper, all that remained of Gunda (376-391 AD), and held it tight as the walls collapsed.

A while ago, [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll asked if I'd do a commentary for a fic of my choice. I figured, why not this one? It's not one of my most commented-on fics, possibly because it's an OC fic, but I'm pretty happy with it despite some flaws, so why not. Plus it gives me a chance to philosophise and write meta on some of the points about my reading of Buffy.

Title: One, But A Lion
Author: Beer Good ([personal profile] beer_good_foamy)
Fandom: Buffyverse, very much pre-series
Word Count: ~1200
Rating: PG13
Summary: Egypt, 48 BC. A Slayer and her watcher take a trip and learn that even in ancient times, some things were more ancient still.

Comments in red. Original version here.

We started out together/Our expectations linked/But every student has a theory/The best he's ever thinked )

OK, so here's a plotbunny I've been poking at for a while. I've tried to work it into both series and post-series fic, as drama and as comedy, as drabble and as longfic... So I finally decided to post it tonight because it coincides with Mark reaching "Homecoming", and he has to go and point out the exact detail that this fic depends on. Gnnn... Oh well. Anyways, here we go.

Title: 67 Characters In Search Of A Memory
Author: Beer Good ([personal profile] beer_good_foamy)
Rating: PG13 except for the swearing
Characters/Pairing: Buffy/Faith...ish. Depends on who you ask.
Timeline:
Warnings: ***Teenage drunkenness, awkward confessions***
Word count: ~1800
Summary: It's Dawn's prom. Yay! Unfortunately, it's also the return of the plot of "Homecoming", which means Buffy and Faith must once again save high schoolers from disaster... Or does it?

I'm talking about Slayerfest. What are you talking about? )

For [livejournal.com profile] open_on_sunday's challenge "Crescent".

Cross-Cultural Exchange
Post-series

"Don't take this the wrong way, but you might need this," Buffy said, handing a cross to Leila as the vampires approached.

The Tunisian Slayer frowned. "What for?"

"Crosses repel vampires. I don't know if it's because it's a religious symbol or what, but they do. Just hold it up - "

Leila leapt at the first vampire and swiped at him with her scimitar. The second the blade touched his neck, he dusted.

"...or you could do that," Buffy nodded.

Leila held up the crescent-shaped blade and smiled. "Allahu Akbar."

Then Rebekah took out the rest with her six-pointed shuriken.

First of all, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] maureen for the nifty LJ gift! Happy birthday - remember what Dylan said: Keep a good head, and always carry a lightbulb!

OK, this one took me by surprise. It's for [livejournal.com profile] staringiscaring's Historical Slayers comment ficathon, and the prompt "Original Slayer, Ancient Egypt, cruising up and down the nile." Once I got this one image in my mind, I had to write this. It's slightly influenced by [livejournal.com profile] stormwreath's History of the Watcher's Council.

There's also an annotated version here.

Fic: Meme

Yay, “Atonement's a Bitch” has been nominated at the Gotta Have Faith awards!

Which seems as good a reason as any to break my writer's block, stop fiddling with this fic and just post it. This is for [personal profile] deird1's comics covers ficathon (specifically, #6) and also, fittingly, for the [community profile] buffy_ficcing prompt “late”, even though it ran way past 1000 words.

Title: Meme
Author: Beer Good ([personal profile] beer_good_foamy)
Fandom: Buffyverse,
Word Count: ~1750
Rating: PG13
Warning: Character death. Sort of.
Pairings: Canon.
Summary: Buffy is setting up the new Slayer organisation when a bureaucratic mix-up kills Faith. This may or may not be a good thing. You can't kill a ghost, after all.

”Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.”

Happy Australia day to my upside-down friends. And for [livejournal.com profile] open_on_sunday's "Down/under" challenge:

Antipodean
Post-series

As the new Slayers gather from all over the world, they exchange stories. Their first slay, how they were called, and the nightmares (and occasional blind priests) of the preceding months.

The ones from Australia, though, have a slightly different story. Apparently the First Evil, being thousands of years old, never quite got the intricacies of the world being round (it's just a theory, after all) and the implications for the ones living on the underside.

"So that's what that meant?" Sheila laughs. "You know, I never understood what was supposed to be scary about From above you, it devours."

Yay! New [livejournal.com profile] still_grrr banner. Thanks a lot to everyone and especially to [livejournal.com profile] xlivvielockex!

Also, here's a drabble for [livejournal.com profile] open_on_sunday's prompt "Bow."

Proper Protocol

Bowing is how man shows submission; expose your neck, look at the floor, place yourself at the mercy of the other.

Slayers don't bow.

"Stupid girl," the demon lord chuckles as the captured girl is brought before him. "Come to assassinate me, hmmm...? Tell you what. Show proper respect to your new master and I might make it quick for you."

With a furious look, the girl holds out her skirt and bends her knees deeply ... then suddenly uncoils like a whip, pulling a knife from her boot as she leaps for his neck.

No, Slayers don't bow. They curtsey.
