A while ago, [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll asked if I'd do a commentary for a fic of my choice. I figured, why not this one? It's not one of my most commented-on fics, possibly because it's an OC fic, but I'm pretty happy with it despite some flaws, so why not. Plus it gives me a chance to philosophise and write meta on some of the points about my reading of Buffy.

Title: One, But A Lion
Author: Beer Good ([personal profile] beer_good_foamy)
Fandom: Buffyverse, very much pre-series
Word Count: ~1200
Rating: PG13
Summary: Egypt, 48 BC. A Slayer and her watcher take a trip and learn that even in ancient times, some things were more ancient still.

Comments in red. Original version here.

So I recently asked for suggestions for fic DVD commentaries, and [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll asked for one for "Birthday Girl", one of my very first fics.

And honestly, I'm not sure there's much to say, especially a bunch of years later, but I'll try.

Because it's been a while, yoinked from [livejournal.com profile] rayruz:

Pick any passage, whatever length, from any story or drabble I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then try to give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you’d expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

Two end-of-year fanfic memes, nicked from [livejournal.com profile] stormwreath and [livejournal.com profile] slaymesoftly respectively. Links to all the stories are here.

Here's a list of the fic I wrote in 2009, explaining - well, where I got the idea for each title from, or what it was supposed to convey, and various other thoughts on the fics.

More commentary (and I'm still taking requests). [livejournal.com profile] shego2drakken asked for some thoughts on the Season 8 fic "The Good Guys." The original is here.

Title: The Good Guys
Author: Beer Good ([livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy)
Rating: PG13
Word Count: ~580
Summary: Not every mission goes as planned.

Commentary? Bank on it! )

To start us off on the commentary thing. Ages ago, [livejournal.com profile] stormwreath asked for a DVD commentary on this piece of W&H backstory. I thought it might be interesting, plus it's an excuse for some meta on the role of good and evil in the Jossverse. It gets rambly and I'm not sure you'll be any wiser by the end, but...

The original version is here.

We go on, no matter what. Our firm has always been here, in one form or another.

Title: Us And Them
Author: Beer Good ([livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy)
Rating: PG13
Word Count: ~1000
Summary: This is how it starts: kill, protect, eat.

And after all, we're only ordinary men )

Hey, I won stuff! Thanks as always to the good people voting at [livejournal.com profile] still_grrr, and [livejournal.com profile] xlivvielockex for the banner. And for making me feel bad for not contributing more, haha.

Also, since it's making the rounds again, how about the commentary meme? Yeah, why not. If you'd like an author's commentary on something I've written, let me know in the comments. To give you an idea of what to expect, the ones I've written before are:

The Good Guys
Us And Them
Mission Accomplished
Wow
Five By Five By Five By...
Welcome To The Slaughterhouse
Atonement's A Bitch
Shooting Star
Dawn Of The Dead
Parole

Links to the fic are in the right-hand column (or here.

My thoughts on BtVS! Let me show you them!

Sorry. For [livejournal.com profile] seraphcelene's fic metathon, here's a commentary track for my fic "Mission Accomplished" which also doubles as meta on Slayerhood and the Watcher/Slayer relationship. Should be interesting, I hope.

Comments look like this. The original uncommented fic is here.

Title: Mission Accomplished
Author: Beer Good ([livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy)
Rating: PG13, possibly R
Word Count: ~3000
Timeline: 1975 and Post-"The Gift"
Summary: The first, last and hardest duty of all Watchers. Buffy has been dead for 24 hours, and there is nothing more for Giles to do... no, wait, he has one last job. One last mission to send his Slayer on.

I did what any good Watcher would do. Got my Slayer killed in the line of duty. Yeah, Giles, fine, but what does that MEAN? )

Doing commentaries for fics you've written is a lot of fun. You get to pretend that you're Marty Scorsese talking about "Mean Streets" at length. Anyway, two more annotated old fics, predating my LJ days; one cute and surreal Buffy/Faith and one evil and utterly sick Willow/Tara ensemble crossover (the latter actually requested, possibly not seriously, by [livejournal.com profile] frogfarm, so... don't blame me):

Title: Five By Five By Five By...
Author: Beer Good ([livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy)
Timeline: Post-"Chosen" (ignoring comics)
Rating: PG13
Length: 1400-ish
Summary: One day, Faith showed up at Buffy's door planning to stay. Only she's not alone.... A Faith/Buffy slashfic with a difference. Quite a few differences, really. Except not that different. Actually, they're pretty much identical. Confusing? Don't worry, all shall be explained. Even the abnormally high number of roles played by Eliza Dushku.
Characters: Buffy, Faith, Faith, Faith, Faith, Faith...

(Original) (Annotated)

Title: Welcome To The Slaughterhouse
Author: Beer Good ([livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy)
Timeline: Alt s5 from "Family"
Rating: NC17 !!!
Length: 20,000 or so in toto (10 chapters)
Summary: Alternate version of "Family", crossover with "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". Tara’s family kidnap her and the scoobies follow, but of course there's things Tara hasn't told them... According to some this is "completely demented" and "morbidly sadistic" but I like it.

OK, so I really liked this DVD commentary thing, and it WAS requested, and it's one of my favourite things I've written, so what the hell: Here's my s7-from-Faith's-perspective fic "Atonement's a Bitch" with running commentary.

Atonement's a Bitch: Chapters 1-5
Atonement's a Bitch: Chapters 6-9

And here's the original version for those who prefer.

Also, two weeks' worth of wins at [livejournal.com profile] still_grrr. Yay. Thanks a lot to all who voted!

Right, here we go with the DVD commentaries. This was a lot of fun.

[livejournal.com profile] frogfarm asked for Shooting Star. This is probably one that makes a lot of sense to do a commentary on, too - one of my favourite fics, with lots of little things going on underneath.

[livejournal.com profile] sl_podcast asked for Dawn of the Dead. The commentary is largely me naming the pop culture references, but there might be an insight or two as well.

[livejournal.com profile] faith_chaos asked for commentary on... a drabble? Hey, whatever floats yer boat. Parole.

And also, someone completely anonymous asked for commentary on Wow. Sure, why not, though I think it's a fairly self-explanatory fic (summary: I'm a perv).

Also, here's a drabble for [livejournal.com profile] open_on_sunday's challenge "Message".

Special Delivery

Damnit. Slimy little...

Psychological warfare used to be so easy. Leave enemies hints that you can kill them anytime you want, watch enemies stampede like cattle, laugh evilly.

But this was just... undignified.

Angelus was soaked to the shoulder when he finally managed to catch the last of Willow's goldfish. Little bastard had eluded him for 20 minutes, it deserved a thread through its... goddamn... slippery... oops. Where'd it go?

He slipped on the fish and fell on his ass with a loud - and painful - crash.

"Willow? Is everything alright?"

"Uh... yeah." Falsetto voice. "Just fine... Mom."

Someone would pay.

Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] faith_chaos because, well, I do love DVD commentaries, I do love to dissect my own stuff, and in the words of Wayne Coyne (Yoshimi musical YAY), I do love duct tape, though that has nothing to do with this.

The DVD Commentary Meme:

If you've ever watched your favorite dvds, and then found yourself eager to hear exactly what the actors, directors, writers and even production designers thought about making the episode, the movie, or whatever - you'll know sometimes the best parts of dvds are hearing the commentaries. Getting into an actor's feelings about the character they play, getting the background behind a writer's plans and metaphors, even just getting the stupid anecdotal stuff that makes you laugh, it's all good.

Ask me about any story, and I'll do a DVD commentary for it! Satisfy your curiosity!
