So apparently some kind soul has nominated "Building Character" over at wicked_awards. Huge thanks! I'm still giddy at how well that fic was received.



Also, on a less jolly note, here's a drabble for open_on_sunday and the prompt "record". I always liked Lydia... I want to say Chalmers, but apparently that's all fanon thanks to this awesome fic? Anyway, here's my take on her.


Academic

Lydia’s father was a Watcher, like his before him. She studied for years, but not everyone’s fit for frontline duty; they also serve et cetera, and archivists are always needed. She grew to love it. Countless unique records going back to antiquity and beyond, brittle from age, Slayers whose entire civilizations were lost but were remembered here.

She survived the blast that destroyed the Council long enough to recognize the ashes raining down around her. Lydia grasped a burning piece of paper, all that remained of Gunda (376-391 AD), and held it tight as the walls collapsed.

Thank you! Well, it's possible - I couldn't bring myself to actually unambiguously kill her in this, so she may have made it, though it's fairly likely that she's a goner.

I was thinking about Building Character two nights ago when I was going to bed actually - there's something about Buffy's fate in that, it's so haunting I can't shake it (in the good way I mean).

That fic has stuck with me too. I've been on a bit of a identity-through-memory kick lately. There's one or two longer fics I'm working on which may or may not ever get finished, but I can't really shake the images that inspire them. This drabble was kind of like that; I just saw that scene of unique documents of long-dead people falling like burning snowflakes through the air, and I had to put Lydia in the middle of it. Just like I have to write that fic where ... so, we'll see. :)
