OK, so I'm really supposed to be working on something for the audio drama Between the Lines (and I am, really, I promise) but a while back I was thinking about that line in "End of Days", when Faith gets to hold the scythe for the first time:

Takes place after 'The Gift', as everyone tries to keep fighting. But then things start going very wrong... deaths, resurrections, memory loss, angst and alternate realities. Starts off kinda slow, but things really start happening around chapter 6 or so.

My first fic (even if this is a slightly re-written version). I really love much of it, though I think it got away from me a little at some point. I mean, I put just about everything including the kitchen sink in there; VampWillow, alternate realities, deaths, resurrections, dream scenes, magic, Jonathan, robots, VampSlayers, The Eagles... I still think it works, and there are some chapters in here that I'm very proud of, but perhaps I wouldn't have written it the same way now.

What if The Gift played out as on the show... right up until about two minutes from the end? What if Buffy didn’t jump? Let’s see what happens. Oh, and just so you know: people are gonna die. It's not gonna be pretty.

This story was inspired by something latarmig said over at buffyforum.se. I couldn't help but agree: as good as "The Gift" is, it MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL. Blood, portal, key, slayer... my head hurts. This is really bleak, but I think it works. Plus I got to explore Buffy's and Dawn's relationship.

Pairing: Well, there's some Willow/Tara and Xander/Anya scenes that I like, but again, not really the point.

Wrote this as part of a challenge to give characters one life-changing wish, which I always thought was sort of a cheap trick. I wanted to see if I could bring Buffy back to WishverseBuffy, given the right circumstances. Plus, hey, Merrick!
